Orville Chuck Abernathy, 77 of Covington died 3:30 p.m. Sunday Nov 22, 1992 at Covington Manor Nursing Center. He had been a life resident of Fountain County and attended Stringtown Church of God. He was a farmer for 25 years and partner with George Hershberger as a John Deere dealer from 1965-73. He was a former superintendent of Veedersburg District Indiana State Highway Department from 1975-1986. Also a former Fountain County Republican chairman and he received the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Otis Bowen and Governor Robert Orr. He was born July 31, 1915 in Stringtown a son of Homer & Elizabeth Vitalie Abernathy. He married Maxine Coffing on October 30, 1940 in Henderson KY. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Ronald and Alan; three brothers Glay and Lloyd (Martha) of Covington and Dale Leon (Judy) Rt 1, Covington; 3 sisters, Leafa Mitchel of Covington; Mrs. Floyd (Letha) Maddox of Indianapolis and Marlis Morgan, Houston Tx; two grandchildren, Hope Abernathy of Danville Illinois and Melanie Abernathy of Cayuga. Visitation was Tuesday at Shelby Funeral Home. Services were on Wedmesday at the funeral home with Tom Gibson officiating. Interment was in Mt. Hope, Covington.
